Amidst the slogans of Jai Bhim, Priyanshi Arya of the Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association (BAPSA) secured the position of General Secretary in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union. Arya's triumph marks a historic milestone as the first Dalit Queer individual to be elected to the prestigious Central Panel.

The highly contested election witnessed Arya emerging victorious over her opponent, Arjun Anand of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), by a significant margin of 926 votes. Arya's resounding win, with 2,887 votes in her favor, underscores the widespread support she garnered from the student body, highlighting a significant shift in the university's political landscape.

However, amidst the celebration, the electoral process faced controversy as Swati Singh, a candidate from the Left United faction, saw her candidacy terminated on the day of voting, rendering all polls for the General Secretary position invalid. Singh, who embarked on an indefinite hunger strike, vowed to pursue legal action and demand a re-election for the post.

In response to rumours about Priyanshi, BAPSA released a statement condemning the labeling of Arya as "Left Supported," emphasizing their autonomy and independent stance in the electoral arena. Rupak Kumar, a contestant for the joint secretary position, criticized the appropriation of Arya's success by leftist factions, Rupak, a contestant for the joint secretary post, remarked, "Earlier left organizations used to appropriate dead icons; now they are stooping so low as to appropriate living people."

Arya, in her address following the win, rebuffed the notion of external support, asserting, "We are not supported by anyone. If you have to add anything, then include JNU Supported, Ambedkar Supported, and Bahujan Supported."
