Whether you're taking the brake out because you've outgrown it or you're replacing worn-down brake pads, this step-by-step tutorial will help you get the job done. Before we begin, let's make sure you have all the necessary tools at hand.
Tools needed:
• 4mm Allen wrench or hex key set
• A pair of hands
• The right-foot skate
• A rag to place the wheel and brake after removal
Now, let's dive into the step-by-step process of removing the brake from your inline skates:
Locate the brake assembly on the back of your inline skate. It's usually attached to the frame near the rear wheel.
Using an Allen wrench, loosen the brake mounting bolt securing the brake assembly to the frame. This is the same bolt securing the rear wheel to the frame. Make counterclockwise turns to unscrew both the wheel and brake.
Once the bolt is removed, pull the brake system away from the frame and you're done.
If you wish to replace the entire system, push the replacement brake into place and use the existing wheel axle to secure everything as before. Using a standard size axle when replacing the entire brake won't work … because it's too short.
And using the long wheel axle when not replacing the brake is a recipe for trouble. The ends of the bolt will stick out of the frame and you'll trip over them when practicing crossovers and powerslides.
If you wish to remove ONLY the brake pad that's worn down, use your Allen Wrench to unscrew the bolt holding this friction pad to the brake mounting bracket. Once removed, put in a new brake pad and screw it securely into position.
