How Was Shiva's Third Eye Created?

Lord Shiva the god of destruction and regeneration. He is also known as Triambake, which in Sanskrit means “Third Eye''. His right eye is supposed to symbolize the sun, his left eye the moon. Shiva’s third eye is located on his forehead and most of the time remains closed while his 2 eyes are always half open, signifying the never ending, ongoing nature of the birth and destruction of the universe. When the eyes are completely closed it signifies the dissolution of the universe and when it is completely open a new cycle of creation begins. However when Shiva opens his third eye, it destroys everything that it sees. In Shiva Purana, there is a story where Shiva burnt Kama Dev (God of love) to ash by opening his third eye. This happens when Kama Dev shoots an arrow of desire on Shiva, to win his affection to Parvati. But have we ever questioned why Shiva has a third eye? Why does it exist and who created it? There is a popular story that talks of how Shiva’s third eye was formed. Once Shiva was engrossed in deep meditation in the Himalayas. His consort, Parvati was in a playful mood in company of her friends and maidens. In the course of her playfulness she happened to put her hands on Shiva’s eyes. As a result of this act, darkness filled the entire Universe.
