Immigrants from all over the world come to Taiwan, where they strive to start a new life in a different culture. In the latest part of our ongoing series, let''s take a look at Kentaro Eguchi from Japan, who makes hand-made wooden toys to inspire the child in all of us.This is the fabled stork of fairy tales that delivers newborns to expectantparents. Its designer is 46-year-old KentaroEguchi from Fukuoka, Japan, who has lived in Taiwan with his Taiwanese wife for 16 years. KentaroEguchiJapanese ImmigrantWhat I like about this toy is that when it’s still, it doesn’t seem like much, but once it starts to move, and everyone sees it in action, people’s faces light up, like,“Wow.” I really like that, personally.At the age of 17, Eguchi went to the US to study art. Then he went to the UK for further study related to early childhood education. There he met his wife Ivy. After they got married, he decided to follow her back to her life in Taiwan. KentaroEguchiJapanese ImmigrantThese toys are all my designs. It’s really hard to find wooden toys for babies especially since they all tend to be made of plastic. So I wanted to make very good quality wooden toys. Eguchi sets extremely high standards for his work. Once, he took two years to conceive of a particular toy’s design, make prototypes and then put it on the market. He sees himself as an artist and an educator. In future, he hopes to create more toys that can delight children as well as being good for the souls of grown-ups. Such toys can be with parents and children as they spend their most precious moments together.
