Sarajevo City Hall, known as Vijećnica, is one of the most iconic landmarks of the city.
Built at the end of the nineteenth century during the Austro-Hungarian period, it was designed as a symbol of Sarajevo’s unique position between East and West.

Over the decades, Vijećnica served as the City Hall and later as the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In 1992, during the Siege of Sarajevo, the building was set on fire and much of its priceless library was destroyed.

After years of restoration, Vijećnica was reopened and today stands once again on the banks of the Miljacka River.
It is a place of architecture, memory, loss, and renewal.
