Jon from CNCROi.com explains how to make custom manifold tags using advanced techniques and high-quality materials. These tags, crafted from black anodized aluminum, are designed to be durable and easily welded or riveted onto manifolds. With a thickness of 0.05 inches and dimensions similar to a credit card (3.5 inches by 2 inches), these tags are perfect for TIG welding onto aluminum manifolds, as aluminum is a material commonly used in manifold construction.

The choice of anodized aluminum is ideal for this project because it provides excellent adhesion for TIG welding. Since manifolds are often made from aluminum, welding the tags onto them ensures a strong, lasting bond. The anodizing process, which colors the aluminum with an oxide layer, gives the tags a sleek, off-white appearance. The black color was chosen for this project to provide the best contrast, making the engraved information easily visible.

Each tag is numbered sequentially from 01 to 025, matching the corresponding manifold. For example, if the manifold is number 25, the tag will also be numbered 25. Jon uses a Galvo laser system to etch these tags, which involves removing the anodized oxide layer from the surface of the aluminum. The process results in precise, detailed markings that are highly readable. The logo and sequential numbering are etched onto the top and bottom of each tag, ensuring consistency across all units.

Jon also shares insights on using a LEGO set for making quick jigs for the laser setup. While LEGO is great for positioning materials when using a Galvo or Gantry laser system, it is not suitable for routers, as the force exerted by the router can damage the Lego structure. For routers, Jon prefers using screws and wooden fixtures to ensure secure placement. The Galvo laser, however, is perfect for small, detailed projects like this one due to its incredibly small beam diameter, which is even finer than a human hair. This precision allows for very fine etching, even on thin fonts or intricate designs that might be difficult to achieve with a router or other tools.

The material choice—aluminum—is key to ensuring compatibility with the manifold, as it minimizes the risk of corrosion compared to mixing different metals, such as aluminum and stainless steel. While the aluminum in the tags may not be of the exact same grade as the manifold, the similarity in material properties makes it easier to weld without worrying about corrosion issues that could arise from mixing metals.

Once the tags are etched and the numbers are updated in the program, Jon carefully checks each one for quality and accuracy. After that, they are packed and shipped to customers, ensuring that the process is smooth and efficient. Jon highlights the versatility of his equipment, including a 30-watt Galvo laser, a 30-watt fiber laser, and a 120-watt CO2 laser, which offer flexibility in handling various projects, whether small or large.
