Описание к видео Moscow State Jewish Theatre Orchestra, cond. L. M. Pulver - Freylechs, Moscow 1939

Noginsky Zavod 9925
Solo violincello played by L. M. Lyulinetsky.
Incidental music for Sholom Aleichem´s play "Luftmentsh" ("Man of Air", ""Человек воздуха"") by Lev Mikhailovich Pulver (comp. 1928).
Born in 1883 near Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, into a family of renowned klezmorim, Lev Pulver learned to play the violin from an early age. He soon also became interested in classical music, and in 1902 he went to St. Petersburg where he studied violin with Nikolai Galkin and composition with Anatoly Lyadov. After his graduation in 1908 he soon got quite prestigious jobs, amongst others as a member of the Stradivarius Quartet.
In 1922, he was appointed musical director at the Moscow State Jewish Theatre (Моско́вский госуда́рственный евре́йский теа́тр, Acronym ГОСЕТ=GOSET), while Marc Chagall was responsible there for the visual side. Founded in Petrograd in 1919 by its first director Alexei Granovsky, the theatre had in 1920 been transferred to Moscow. From 1923 onwards, the theatre´s repertoire included an increasing number of plays in Yiddish.
When Granovsky defected to the West in 1928, he was succeeded by Solomon Mikhoels, already famous as an actor, as new director of the GOSET.
Lev Pulver was alone responsible to write all the music for the theatre´s many productions and to bring it on stage with the house orchestra. In 1939, the year of this recording, he was awarded the title "People´s Artist of the RSFSR" and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor for his work at GOSET. He held his position until 1948, when in the course of Stalin´s antisemitic campaign "against rootless cosmopolitanism" first the director S. Mikhoels was murdered and some time later the theatre had to close permanently. Pulver survived the antisemitic purges, but his career was virtually over. However, during his active years at GOSET, he had probably composed more music altogether than other composers with a less demanding job did in their entire life.
Lev Pulver died in Moscow in 1970.
Enjoy!
