Michael Packard – Man Who Survived in a Whale’s Mouth

Michael Packard is a commercial lobster diver from Provincetown, Massachusetts, who made international headlines in June 2021 when he survived an incredible and rare encounter with a humpback whale. While diving about 45 feet underwater near Herring Cove Beach, Packard was suddenly engulfed by a humpback whale that had accidentally scooped him up while feeding.

Packard spent approximately 30–40 seconds inside the whale's mouth, fully conscious, and initially thought he was going to die. However, the whale soon surfaced and spat him out. Experts believe the whale realized Packard wasn’t prey and ejected him as quickly as possible. He was rescued by his crewmate and treated at a hospital for soft tissue injuries but miraculously escaped serious harm.
