Nyepi is a day of silence and self-reflection. marking the New year, according to Bali's calendar. the whole island stays indoors, no travel, no work, no lighting fires or turning on lights. 24 hours of quiet. even the airport closes for one day.
The Evening before Nyepi, is a different story. all over the island, the Balinese march through the streets carrying large demon like dolls called Ogoh-Ogoh. the purpose of this procession is to attract the evil spirits into the Ogoh-Ogohs which are then taken to the graveyard and burned...its quite an event
