Описание к видео Doctor explains Discoid Eczema | Causes, Symptoms, Photos and Treatment

In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about discoid eczema.

What is discoid eczema?

Discoid eczema, also known as nummular eczema, is a type of eczema that causes distinctive round or oval-shaped patches of inflamed skin. The word “discoid” refers to the disc-like shape of the rash. It can affect people of all ages but is more common in adults, especially men in middle age.

What causes discoid eczema?

The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but several factors can contribute. These include dry skin, minor skin injuries (like insect bites or scratches), and sensitivity to certain substances such as metals or fragrances. People with a history of other types of eczema, or allergic conditions like asthma or hay fever, may be more likely to develop discoid eczema. Cold weather, stress, and alcohol may also trigger flare-ups.

What are the symptoms of discoid eczema?

Round or oval red, pink, or brownish patches on the skin
Itching or burning in the affected areas
Dry, cracked, or scaly skin
Lesions that may ooze fluid or become crusted over
Thickening or hardening of the skin if it becomes chronic
Commonly affects the legs, arms, hands or torso
Treatment of discoid eczema

There’s no cure, but flare-ups can be managed with the right treatment and skincare:

Moisturise regularly to keep the skin hydrated and reduce itching
Topical steroids may be prescribed to reduce inflammation
Antibiotics might be needed if the patches become infected
Avoid known triggers and try to prevent skin injury or excessive dryness
Stick to a consistent daily skincare routine — this is key to managing symptoms and preventing flare-ups

If your symptoms are persistent or severe, it’s important to see your GP or dermatologist for assessment and support.
