Inside the House Where WWII in the Philippines Ended. During World War II, General Tomoyuki Yamashita, commander of Japanese forces in Luzon, was captured in Kiangan, Ifugao, in the Cordillera, and brought to Baguio. On September 3, 1945, he formally surrendered at the High Commissioner’s Residence at Camp John Hay; now the U.S. Ambassador’s Residence, ending organized Japanese military resistance in the Philippines. Built in 1940 as a summer home for the U.S. High Commissioner, the two-story L-shaped house was seized by Japanese forces during the occupation, who used it as a military headquarters and added features like tunnels and bougainvillea landscaping. Today, the residence retains original furnishings, artifacts, and seven bedrooms, including the one Yamashita stayed in before signing the Instrument of Surrender. The residence remains a key historical site, preserving the moment that officially closed Japan’s military presence in the Philippines.
