The Carol Ringers are part of a long-standing tradition of handbell choirs at St. Matthew’s UMC in Annandale, Virginia. Fourteen high school students from four different high schools practice every Monday night for two hours. Most of the members have been ringing since the 3rd grade. Our handbell program was started 50 years ago with one two-octave adult choir. The Carol Ringers started in 1976, expanding the program to include youth. Over the years St. Matthew’s Handbell program has continued to grow. There are now two children’s choirs, two youth choirs and two adult choirs. The Carol Ringers are very active in the community; they play every month for church service. Christmas Concert venues have included our church, retirement centers, The Kennedy Center, and the State Department. They are the featured guest instrumental group this year with Fairfax Choral Society. This year, they will perform on the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage on December 30, 2023. The Carol Ringers have an annual Dessert Concert, Spring Concert and tour every summer with the other youth choir, the Celebration Ringers. The 14 members are active in other music ensembles, school and club sports, honors societies, boy and girl scouts, community service, and mission trips.
