BIG PRIMARIES ARE OKAY – With Gov. Evers retiring in 2026, we could see both Democratic and Republican primaries with a dozen or more candidates. That’s not a new development, as we were reminded by Rep. Lee Snodgrass (D-Appleton).

Evers himself emerged from a field in 2018 that at one point had 12 candidates either declared or showing serious public interest. (Ultimately, eight candidates made it on the ballot.) But Snodgrass says large primaries can make the eventual nominee stronger, having faced skepticism or opposition within their own party at first.
