STORYLINE:
Soldiers in the outskirts of Kyiv on Wednesday were securing heavy ammunition and spare parts from armoured vehicles left behind after Russian forces gave up on their attempt to encircle Ukrainian capital.
Meanwhile, police and rescue services checked on residents and cautioned them away from areas believed to be mined by departing Russian troops.
In the town of Borodyanka, east of Kyiv, de-mining units searched for unexploded ordnance as firefighters and rescue services combed through the rubble of destroyed apartment blocks, looking for the bodies of victims believed to be inside.
Thwarted in their efforts to take the capital and forced to withdraw, Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces are now pouring into the Donbas, Ukraine's eastern industrial heartland.
The Ukrainian military has said it is bracing for a new offensive there.
