This black & white educational film from Louis de Rochemont "Making a Living Around the World" is part of a series of called "The Way We Live". This episode, "Trade and Transportation", focus around the way people sell or trade goods in countries all over the world. Copyright 1958.

Opening titles: United World Films, Inc. presents The Way We Live - Making A Living Around the World - Trade and Transportation (:06-:27). Main Street USA, shops on the street including a delicatessen and a grocery store. Fruits and vegetables. Hardware store. Clothing store. French Bakery, a cobbler or shoe repair man at work. A cash register opens and money is exchanged. A little girl writes down trade in a notebook. A girl and her mother leave the store (:28-1:40). Map shows United States, Canada, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The map zoom in on the province of Quebec in Canada. French Canadian farmers at work. A man puts a heavy bag onto a wagon. Potatoes, apples and onions are loaded onto it along with eggs and chickens. Horse pulls the wagon with a father and son (1:41-2:54). Father and son arrive into town. A woman pays the man for some food. Next customer, father delivers eggs, woman pays with credit. At the end of the day, the pair return home. Country of the Netherlands aka Holland. Farmlands of Holland. A canal. A farmer uses a small boat to transport food (2:55-5:04). Boat uses a small cable car to go up and over into a larger canal. Some boats pass through locks. Small boats or barges move down a canal and past some bidders who look at the merchandise (5:05-7:14). Canton, China. Farmers walk. Canton street market. Merchants sell their wares. Food is cut as its purchased. A fish merchant (7:15-9:08). Maylaya, southeastern Asia. Bamboo raft is being rowed by a native. Men and boys unload their goods. Jungle products are going to be for sale. Bartering is done between men and merchants. The natives seek knives. Cloth is looked at. The Natives walk into the jungle and walk back (9:09-11:29). Map shows Germany, France, Belgium and Switzerland. Barges move supplies. Iron ore is placed onto barges and railroad cars. Railcars move down the tracks (11:30-13:03). British Isles on the map. London on the Thames River. Docks along the Thames. English automobiles. Ships are loaded with products from the factories of Great Britain. Cargo is hoisted onto the ships. Ships pull out of the dock (13:04-14:26). United States and Canada on the map. New York harbor in New York, New York. Manhattan Island skyline. Ships pass the Statue of Liberty. Many states have access to New York City. Grand Central Station. Railcars on the tracks. Penn Station in New York. Bridges into and out of NYC. Cars come into and out of bridges and highways. Cars drive towards NYC. Trucks bring supplies into the city. New York Harbor, ships are loaded. Automobiles and supplies are hoisted. Air transportation is now a factor. SwissAir plane, Peruvian International Airlines plane. City of Eindhoven airplane. TWA Lockheed Constellation. Children watch a DC-6 take off (14:27-17:26). End credits (17:27-17:34).
