How to Install a Slab Door

In this how-to, I guide you in how to hang a slab door.

Often times, I am installing a door already in a door jamb. Meaning I’m removing the old door and door jamb, and installing an entirely new unit.

Sometimes, I cannot do that, as in this case. The home was built in 1925, and at the time they did things differently. For example, these days a door jamb has a 2x6 inside frame, however 2x6 today is not what it was in 1925. In 1925 it was a “true” 2x6, these days the actual dimensions of a 2x6 is actually 1 1/2" x 5 1/2".

All that to say, the door jamb in this home was unique and we would be unable to buy a door jamb of the same size today.

In my consultation with this customer, I spoke of two options; I could custom make a new door jamb (expensive) or we could just install a new slab (less expensive than even buying a door and door jamb together).

They opted for the second option, and in the video below, you can see the process I went through to install this slab door within the existing, 1925 door jamb.
