Was Olenna Tyrell actually trying to poison Tyrion Lannister? Everyone remembers the Purple Wedding as Joffrey’s downfall, but what if he wasn’t the intended target at all? The Tyrells had already tried to marry Sansa Stark to Willas Tyrell, a match that would have given them control of Winterfell and the North. That plan was ruined when Tywin forced her into wedlock with Tyrion. If Tyrion were suddenly dead, Sansa would be free again—and Olenna could still secure the Stark claim through her grandson. Now look at how Joffrey dies. He doesn’t start choking after wine—it’s after he grabs Tyrion’s portion of the pie and shoves it in his mouth. What if the poison was meant for Tyrion’s slice, not Joffrey’s cup? In that case, Joffrey’s cruelty doomed him, not Olenna’s plan. It’s possible the Queen of Thorns wasn’t striking at the boy king at all—she was trying to eliminate Tyrion Lannister.
