(29 Nov 1956) Arriving at Canberra, His Royal Highness was welcomed by the Governor General, Sir William Slim and Lady Slim. Then Premier Menzies and Dame Pattie were presented. The Duke wore the uniform of an Air Marshal of the Royal Australian Air Force. On his way to New Guinea, His Royal Highness called at Mannus Island, a remote naval base just south of the Equator. Near Darwin in Northern Australia, is the open-cut Uranium mine at Rum Jungle. Then across the outback to the town Alice Springs, headquarters of the Flying Doctor Service. The Duke saw how they answer distress calls from remote homesteads. One such isolated station is Brunette Downs which the Duke also visited.
