Godzilla: King of the Monsters: Ken Watanabe & Michael Dougherty Interview

Long live the king. The world’s most beloved Kaiju are back at it once again in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the follow-up to 2014’s Godzilla from writer/director Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat), who conjured up one of the most spectacular monster spectacles in cinema history with his epic battle of big beasties. The film puts Godzilla, Ghidorah, and Mothra up against each other in some of the most impressive kaiju action ever captured on screen, and brings back a few familiar faces, foremost among them Ken Watanabe‘s Dr. Ishiro Serizawa.

With King of the Monsters in theaters this weekend, I recently sat down for a quick interview with Dougherty and Watanabe to discuss the epic monster sequel. They talked about bringing the monsters’ personalities to life and what it was like using three mo-cap actors to get Ghidorah right, Serizawa’s relationship with the monsters in the film, three essential Godzilla films to watch, and Dougherty was told any particular monsters were off the table by the studio.
