I recently caught Deep Purple and Judas Priest LIVE in Virginia Beach, VA on 9/8. It was my very first time seeing both bands and, considering their age and recent personnel changes, decided to keep my expectations LOW. However, after witnessing both bands in action, there's no question - expectations were EXCEEDED.
For Judas Priest, 2018 started off with some bad news. In January they lost former drummer, Dave Holland, who had played on many of their CLASSIC albums, like "British Steel" and "Screaming for Vengeance ". Then, in February it was announced that original axeman Glen Tipton was DONE touring due to his advancing Parkinson's disease, which he's been struggling with over the past few years.
For the first time, Judas Priest was going out not having one original member in their legendary, dual-guitar attack. Andy Sneap, who co-produced Priest's strong and latest album, "Firepower", stepped in to replace Tipton for this tour.
That being said, Judas Priest "delivered the goods" on ALL levels. Drummer Scott Travis was extremely solid, lead guitarist Richie Faulkner was quite amazing throughout, shredding and bending his notes with jaw-dropping precision.
However, the biggest surprise was singer Rob Halford who doesn't appear to have lost anything on this vocals, which roared, soared and screamed at every turn.
Overall, a very SOLID, energetic and powerful set from the "metal gods".
So, where does Priest go from here without Glenn Tipton able to tour? Will original guitarist KK Downing slip out of retirement to support the band? In a recent interview, Downing was "stunned" that he wasn't asked to participate in this tour. Be sure to comment below and let me know what you think!

Up next were Deep Purple who, like Judas Priest, fired on all cylinders and delivered an amazingly, solid, fun show.
You would have never known that just two years ago, drummer Ian Paice suffered a stroke that left him unable to drum and actually miss some shows for the first time in his career.
Paice worked well with longtime bassist Roger Glover, who make up one of the most underrated rhythm sections in rock history. It was KEY for Paice and Glover to be "locked in" for Purple to groove... and they did not disappoint.
Keyboards were covered by Don Airey, who has played with Rainbow, Ozzy, Whitesnake, and even Priest. He did a tremendous job as well, having taken over for Purple's longtime maestro, Jon Lord, who passed away a few years ago.
For 73, lead singer Ian Gillan still had loads of enthusiasm and was in fairly good voice as well. He can't scream like Halford, but he can still growl like the Gillian of yesterday. Guitarist Steve Morse had been on my wishlist and he didn't disappoint either. Even though his style is quite different from that of original guitarist Richie Blackmore, Morse was always phenomenal and serving each song just right while allowing room for his own style. As mentioned in the video, why isn't Steve Morse in the RRHOF along with the rest of Purple? Sure, he wasn't part of the lineup that crafted the now classic rock classic "Machine Head" but he's been a part of the Deep Purple "family" for 20 years, helping to keep it alive, how do you skip over him?
