#DidYouKnow Its aliases include Amphioxus, and Branchiostoma. In Japan, it's named in “Endangered Animals of Japanese Marine and Fresh Water Organisms.”
Both adults and larvae exhibit a "cough" reflex to clear the mouth or throat of debris.
They are inactive filter feeders, having a hollow nerve cord, four kinds of light-sensing structures, segmented kidneys and gonads. They lack respiratory system.
