Описание к видео The world’s most unique time-lapse from Antarctica.

This is one of the world’s rarest phenomena that only occurs a couple of days a year, in the world’s most remote and inaccessible regions.
This is the beginning of the transition from polar night, to polar day. Here, the sun returns to Scott Base and McMurdo Station, Antarctica for the first time since April.

Seeing the sun even for such a short period of time was invigorating. Energy felt like it returned the continent that had been dark for months prior. It transformed the landscape into light, and let us see things again. The mountains, the glaciers, our volcanoes, the sea ice, the base(!).

I know of less than 10 videos that exist that film this occurring, and all of them are from Antarctica. Although this also occurs in the Arctic, I have yet to see a similar time-lapse. If you know of one, please tag me!

Our days will continue to get longer. We are gaining just under an hour of extra sunlight per day. By the 23rd of October, Scott Base and McMurdo Station will enter their polar day, where the sun will not set at all until the end of February. 24 hours of sun, and so much time and light for activities.

The return of the sun signals the official end of winter. We are expecting a flight to land soon that will bring with it the first people and first fresh food that we have seen for months and months. The plane has been trying to get here for over a week, but the temperature has been too cold for safe flight operations. It won’t be long, but for now, we are continuing to work in our little winter bubble, only this time, in a little bit more light than we’ve had previously.
