In the next few days, Morning Live will shine the spotlight on TVET colleges and universities.
Meanwhile, classes at Technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges commenced on 15 January, with a headcount enrolment of 482 244 students.

There are 50 TVET colleges across South Africa, operating on approximately 364 campuses spread across rural and urban areas. TVET colleges mainly train young people to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes that are needed in the labour market.

They serve young people who want to enrol for vocational programmes after finishing school with a Grade 12, as well as learners who want to complete their schooling.
However, there are concerns that, for a long time, the TVET sector has been shunned by many learners and their parents who prefer university education.
This has led some TVET colleges to struggle to meet the expectations of students.

To discuss this further, we're now joined on the line by Lecturer and Researcher in the School of Education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Professor Wayne Hugo.
