Born Ivan Guimarães Lins, June 16, 1945 in Rio De Janeiro (Brazil), Ivan lins is a Latin Grammy-winning Brazilian musician. He has been an active performer and songwriter of Brazilian popular music (MPB) and jazz for over thirty years. His first hit, "Madalena", was recorded by Elis Regina in 1970. "Love Dance", a hit in 1989, is one of the most recorded songs in musical history.

He spent several years in Boston, Massachusetts, while his father, a naval engineer, continued graduate studies at M.I.T., studied at the Military College in Rio. He later received a degree in industrial chemical engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He considered a career in volleyball before discovering his considerable musical talent. Ivan Lins currently resides in Rio de Janeiro.

Because Lins’ father was a graduate engineering student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Ivan was raised in both Brazil and the USA. In Brazil, he pursued his own studies and was also seriously considering a sporting career but sensed that music might offer a more fulfilling future. While growing up, he had heard and enjoyed American big band music on radio and records and when he 18 attended a live performance by pianist Luiz Eca with his Tanuba Trio, a Brazilian jazz-bossa nova group. Inspired by this experience, Lins began learning to play piano and within a couple of years was playing professionally in Rio de Janeiro nightspots. An early composition, ‘Madalena’, was recorded by the popular Brazilian artist Elis Regina and sold very well, not only in Brazil but also in Europe.

During the 80s, Lins was introduced by percussionist Paulinho Da Costa to record producer Quincy Jones who used a Lins song, ‘Dinorah, Dinorah’, on George Benson’s Brazilian-tinged Give Me The Night. This was quickly followed by a similar pairing that placed Lins’ ‘Velas’ on Jones’ The Dude. Soon, more songs by Lins were picked up for recording by American artists, among them Manhattan Transfer who featured two of his songs on Brasil, a Grammy award winner as Best Jazz Vocal Album, and Jones himself who used ‘Setembro’ on his Back On The Block. In 1988, two Lins songs were performed by the Crusaders on Life In The Modern World.
