Note: this process will work on concrete gnomes, cement gnomes, and (likely) resin gnomes. When working on restoring a plaster gnome, however, take care when sanding. Rough sand paper or too much force could remove some of the plaster from the actual gnome once the protection and paint are sanded off.

As a safety precaution, please protect yourself and use a dust mask when sanding. I found that soap and water with a good scrub were enough to get off the gunk on the vintage garden gnome, but it needed sanding to get it smooth.

This gnome restoration process works for ceramic gnomes and has not been tested on resin or plastic gnomes yet.
