What is the OHM?
The EDELRID OHM is an innovative, new solution for the problems experienced by climbing partners with a significant difference in weight. That is to say the risk for a heavier lead climber if their partner has difficulty controlling their falls and the risk for a lighter belayer if their partner’s falls pull them off the ground, hurling them against the wall. The OHM is an assisted-braking resistor that you install at the first bolt in the safety chain.

Clarification on the recommended weight difference:
With the introduction of the OHM II, we have implemented an enhanced testing method that objectively evaluates the amount of weight compensated for by the device and communicates this precise value. Through this new method, we determined that the OHM II offsets 25 kg. In comparison, according to this same new testing method, the first-generation OHM compensates for 15 kg (i.e., 10 kg less).

Now, anyone using the OHM II should consider the 25 kg offset, while the climbing party always needs to assess its individual situation and decide whether additional measures are still necessary. The OHM II offsets a higher weight difference than its predecessor. However, the optimized cam geometry also reduces false activations compared to the OHM I. Therefore, you can expect smoother handling and better performance.
