I know that broken needles are frustrating! I’ve been there sooo many times 🙃

Here are some reasons why your sewing
machine needle might be breaking:

1. You’re sewing over tough objects such as buttons, metal bars and zipper teeth. Solution: Look out for tough objects while you sew to avoid jamming and breaking your needle on them. Sew around them or avoid them all together.

2. You’re sewing over pins. Solution: Put pins far away from where you’ll be sewing or simply remove pins while you sew.

3. Your needle isn’t the right size for your fabric. Solution: Use the appropriate size and type needle for thick fabrics such as denim, faux leather and canvas. I suggest size 90/14 or 100/16 in denim needles.

4. You are pulling on the fabric while sewing. When you apply too much pressure to the fabric, the needle can bend and break. Solution: Allow your fabric to flow through the sewing machine and if you have to apply pressure, don’t make it too much. Be gentle.

5. Your tension is too high. If you notice the bobbin thread being pulled to the top of your fabric, it’s time to reduce your tension. Keep it at 4 ideally but decrease to 2 or 3 for lightweight fabrics. Solution: Turn the tension dial towards the left to reduce the tension.
