Saint Leo the Great | Stories of Saints

Saint Leo the Great, pope from 440 to 461 AD, was a prominent figure in early Christianity. Known for his theological writings and leadership during turbulent times, he defended orthodox Christian doctrine against heresies like Monophysitism. Leo's influence extended beyond theological matters; he negotiated with barbarian invaders, securing Rome's safety, and asserted papal authority over the Western Church.

He convened the Council of Chalcedon, which affirmed Christ's dual nature. Leo's "Tome" was influential in defining Christology. His sermons, including "On the Incarnation," are revered for their clarity and depth. Saint Leo's papacy strengthened the role of the Bishop of Rome in both spiritual and temporal matters, earning him the title "the Great." His feast day is celebrated on November 10 in the Roman Catholic Church.
