"The neighbors started to decorate their building facades, and each time they did it with their own resources. They put more lights, and the only motivation was that the people pass by, see, and be amazed, and that the children are happy passing by a place that looks like magic."

STORYLINE:
For 20 years residents living on Lima's Monte Umbroso street have adorned the façades, balconies and gardens of their homes with lights during Christmas.

Now for a second year, the local government is crowning residents there with a best decoration award.

The street decorations have become so well-known that people travel to see the displays.

"You can really feel the Christmas spirit. You see the streets are full of children and people, so the truth is that it's really nice," said Sandra Garcia, who travelled to see the lights late into the night.

The prize-giving ceremony has cemented a tradition which was already drawing in tourists with the winners getting a trophy for their efforts.

The judges score the entries according to established criteria such as creativity, lighting, harmony, and composition.

The award ceremony was accompanied by a Christmas concert, attended by locals and visitors.
