Hospital care is expensive in the United States and costs, even for the same treatment, often vary widely across institutions. In response, employers and state policymakers are exploring reference-based pricing (RBP), which would set insurance payment rates of employer-sponsored health insurance plans as multiples of Medicare prices.

A study led by Yang Wang of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health examines the range of commercial price variation within a hospital by using the commercial prices disclosed by 5 national insurers (Blue Cross Blue Shield, CVS/Aetna, Cigna, Elevance Health, and United Healthcare) for 10 common hospital services.
