If you notice that your hens have messy bottoms, be sure to inspect them. Chickens have a few ailments that can show up “back there,” including vent gleet (basically a yeast infection that shows up with white/yellow discharge), mites, or fly strike (maggots feeding, which can be deadly to your girls). These ailments can be especially bad during this time of year with the heat, moisture, and bugs.

Thankfully I think my girls’ dirty bottoms were probably from the excessive heat in my region (~95 most days), but I took action just in case. I used Dawn dish soap in a cool bath (works great for killing bugs like lice or mites) and misted their bottoms with a little Vetercyn in case there were small wounds that needed treatment.

I’m also planning to give their coop a refresh and clean out. Along with new nesting pads, I’ll also top off their dust bath because they have been using that area to stay cool… this also helps them keep their buggies at bay. I’ll add a little diatomaceous earth to their sand and sawdust for good measure, along with a sprinkling in their nesting area.
