THIS VIDEO: Philip-Lorca diCorcia talks in a slow laconic manner that leaves listeners unsure whether what he’s joking or being literal. His images similarly occupy a space between fact and fiction and also blend a documentary approach with staged techniques. Essentially his work asks viewers to question the assumed truth of a photograph and to consider alternative ways in which images might speak to and represent reality. His mundane life scenes leave the viewer with a sense of an uncertain reality that is poignant as well as poetic. He has tried to keep himself and his work beyond traditional labelling. He refuses to describe himself as an artist because he considers those who assume this title are somehow assuming some form of moral high ground…in a similar way to how he sees photojournalists presuming that they are the arbiters of truth. He’s come to the conclusion that no one really knows what’s going on – rather its apathy and self-preservation which defines our societies. He describes himself as a reluctant photographer - he tries to practice photography as little as possible because he finds it extremely frustrating and sometimes agonizing. Even when he was studying at art school in Boston with photographers like Nan Goldin and David Armstrong, he felt that they were too earnest and he was repulsed by their me-centred approach. Even his very early work displays a rejection of this self-absorbed school of thought.
