Crash data from 2016 is now available from the NHTSA and USDOT. Overall, fatalities were on the rise, especially in areas concerning drinking, speeding, and unbelted driving.

Motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians saw increases in fatalities as well. The total fatalities from crashes for 2016 came to 37,461, a marked increase of 5.6% from 2015. One of the highest rates was an 8.4% increase seen in van occupant fatalities.

According to data collected by FARS, a census of fatal crashes in all 50 states (and includes D.C. and Puerto Rico) pedestrian, cyclist and motorcyclist fatalities showed high increases.

Motorcyclists saw their highest number of fatalities since 2008. Additional data showed some hope, however.

Fatalities from distracted driving and drowsy driving had decreased by a total of 5.7%. However, drunk driving, speeding, unbelted occupancy and cyclist deaths continue to be on the rise.

According to the Houston car accident attorneys at Smith & Hassler, Texas leads the nation in traffic fatalities and has seen a 5.4% increase in deaths from 2015 to 2016.
