Scuffles and tensions arose between the police and protesters at the Occupy Democracy demonstration in London as the protesters tried to reach the Nelson Mandela statue at Parliament Square, Friday evening. One man was seen carried away by the police.

Around one hundred activists gathered at 18h and carried banners reading messages like "Fracking destroys communities" and screamed messages like "people have the power" and "whose streets? our streets!" Long tailbacks quickly formed along Whitehall as frustrated motorists sounded their horns.

The Occupy Democracy demonstration is organised by campaign group Occupy London to lobby for greater democracy. It is due to last three days, until Sunday 23rd.
