The Muddy Creek Pioneer Trail and Handcart Trek, in the southwest corner of Wyoming, is a relatively unknown portion of the Mormon, Oregon and California trail that was used between 1847 and 1869.
At Muddy Creek camp and crossing, sixty to seventy-thousand pioneers spent the night on their journey west. Two-hundred-fifty-thousand gold seekers rushed through on their way to California. In the winter of 1856, rescuers camped here in the snow with the Martin and Willey Handcart Companies. In 1857, Johnston's army camped with 2,000 men on their way to invade the Salt Lake Valley.
In June of 2019, some 160-plus-years later, over 400 youth and leaders of The Cedar Hills West Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints camped in this very same spot, as they re-enacted the pioneer handcart trek over an 18 mile portion of the original trail. This video tells their story.
