In a major setback to Pakistan’s deep state, Ex-ISI DG Faiz Hameed was arrested on August 12. The former chief was arrested in connection with a land development case known as “Top City Project”. The housing scheme scandal led to Hameed’s Court Martial by the Pakistani Army soon after the top court’s orders. Faiz Hameed was the director general of ISI from 2019 to 2021 and is considered mastermind of major terror attacks against India. Hameed was also considered a close aide of PTI Chief and former Pak PM Imran Khan, who had named him to head the ISI when he was the premier. DG-ISI is generally considered the second most powerful military officer in Pakistan after the head of the Army. The tainted spy agency has been accused of colluding with terror groups plotting major terror attacks against India. Faiz Hameed came into spotlight when he was filmed drinking tea at Kabul hotel shortly after Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2021. Notably, ISI had long been accused of backing the Taliban by the US while the US-led forces were fighting a war in Afghanistan since 2001. Hameed took a premature retirement in November 2022, and the ISI is now headed by Gen Nadeem Anjum.
