Описание к видео The Indigo Scarf: The Story Behind the Story with Author PJ Piccirillo

Join author, PJ Piccirillo, historical researcher and master storyteller, as he steps back in time to Pennsylvania’s pioneer days. His recent book, The Indigo Scarf, explores a little-known part of our state’s development in the early 1800s, as it follows two escaped slaves and their families
who forge new lives in the Appalachian Mountains.

Piccirillo spent four years researching the story of these pioneers, finding descendants in rural Pennsylvania and exploring the wilderness to find where they lived. To understand what it took to carve a life out of a mountainous land, he learned how to build a mill, make cloth out of flax fibers, and build a log cabin without the use of modern tools. Knocking on doors in rural areas,
he discovered family bibles and photographs, as well as stories passed down through generations. Step back to the early 1800s to learn the story of Pennsylvania's pioneers, whose lives were focused not only on fighting the wilderness but also keeping ahead of slavecatchers.

PJ Piccirillo is the award-winning author of the The Indigo Scarf, Heartwood, and Nunc Stans—A Ferry Tale. He is a literary artist-in-residence for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, editor of the Northern Appalachia Review, and instructor of English and Humanities at Butler County Community College. In his spare time, he is a community firefighter, an EMT, NASCAR
firefighter, township supervisor, winemaker, and Cubmaster.
