What are the benefits of exercise? Improved circulation, improved memory, reduce pain from arthritis, improve sleep patterns, improve your mood, help control blood pressure, increased balance and strength which all lead to increased quality of life. Strength can improve at any age so it is imperative that we work on upper body strengthening exercises 2-3 times per week. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to sarcopenia or "muscle softening" as they become older. This video includes both balance and strengthening exercises, which can prevent falls and hip fractures. This video is appropriate for those older adults who can stand with minimal support. As a Physical Therapist for 26 years, I strive to have all my clients on a strength training program, especially my senior clients. Having a consistent arm and leg workout done on a weekly basis can make a huge difference in the quality of life for everyone, especially older adults (65+ years old) . I've already uploaded a video that deals with upper extremity (arm) strengthening exercises and this deals with legs and hips. After watching both videos, you should have a solid program in place.
