[English description below] Johann Sebastian Bachs Praeludium C-dur (BWV 846) aus dem "Wohltemperierten Klavier" überarbeitete Charles Gounod 1852 während seines Studiums. Zu dieser Zeit war es Mode Werke von Bach im romantischen Sinne zu bearbeiten. So fügte Gounod die ersten vier Takte als Vorspiel und einen weiteren Takt hinzu und legte darüber eine eigene Melodie. Das neu geschaffene Werk bekam den Titel "Meditation über das erste Präludium von Bach". Erst 1859 unterlegte Gounod die Melodie mit den lateinischen Text des Ave Maria. Das Werk erfuhr sehr schnell eine weite Verbreitung und gilt für die meisten heute als DIE Ave-Maria-Vertonung.

Charles Gounod revised Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude in C major (BWV 846) from the "Well-Tempered Clavier" in 1852 during his studies. At that time it was fashionable to work on works by Bach in the romantic sense. So Gounod added the first four bars as a prelude and another bar and put his own melody on top. The newly created work was given the title "Meditation on Bach's First Prelude". It was not until 1859 that Gounod underlaid the melody with the Latin text of the Ave Maria. The work quickly became widespread and is considered by most to be THE Ave Maria setting.
