Matt Hollamby, Brisbane Manager, Terminals Division, Patrick, tells about their pioneering experiences in terminal automation: "When the Brisbane AutoStrad Terminal was opened in 2005, it was one of only three automated terminals in the world." Today, automation remains a key competitive advantage in the challenging Australian stevedoring business.

The Kalmar AutoStrad(TM) is a flexible solution by decoupling duty cycles at the terminal. "The crane driver can discharge the box to the tarmac and we can build a buffer stack behind the crane. We would argue that the automated straddle carrier is far more flexible, scalable and deployable than the traditional AGV [automated guided vehicle] technology."

A key achievement is the terminal's world class record in safety: "We went 12 months without a single lost time injury among our 160 employees. This is incredibly important to me as Terminal Manager and to Patrick as a company."
