Pingara - The Speech of Truth

Tulu Naadu, is a region in the coastal belt of Karnataka. A unique culture of this place is the worship of people is the bodies of whom “God Descends/Inhabits” momentarily in the form of “spirits”; more than worshipping God itself. It is popular belief amongst people that those from the ancient times, who once bravely fought & died against the practices of upper & lower caste (the societally termed “backward ethnic community” of Dalits) and discrimination due to class differences; are the ones who, in the form of “spirits, enter the bodies of the others” to “speak & uphold the truth” from time to time! Even to this day, the belief of the people from the Tulu Naadu is that the purpose of these “brave spirits” is to act against all such discriminations & provide justice; by “using the bodies” of people from a particular sect (“Kola Kattuva” sect). Whenever anyone from Tulu Naadu encounter troubles in their lives and whole heartedly approach these “brave spirits” without prejudice or discrimination, along with a prayer; they are presented with the flower of the Areca nut tree. That flower is PINGAARA! It is ironical that as soon as the brave spirit “leaves” his body, this person is immediately considered as belonging to the lower caste of Dalit. A story woven around this unique phenomenon is the feature film PINGAARA.
