Apart from the rich literary legacy, this pub is also one of the oldest pub in the world. This was the first new building to be built following the Great Fire of London, which destroyed most of the City in 1666. It was rebuilt by Christopher Wren shortly after the fire in 1666 as a place where the men working on his charge to rebuild the city could find a meal in a pint after a long hard day.
