Body mass index is one of the anthropometric measurements that nurses collect or calculate as a part of a health assessment. In this video, you'll learn how to calculate a patient's BMI using the imperial formula and metric formula.

To calculate BMI, you must first collect the patient's height and weight. If you are using imperial units (pounds and inches), you'll use the following BMI formula: BMI = 703 X (weight in pounds / height in inches squared).

If your patient's measurements are in metric units (kilograms and meters), you'll use this formula: BMI = weight in kg / height in meters squared.

In most cases, you'll wait to round until the end, and you'll round to the first decimal place (nearest tenth).
