Anthony Albanese led his centre-left Labor Party to victory in Australia’s federal election on May 21, 2022. Their victory ends almost four years of government under incumbent Liberal-National coalition leader Scott Morrison, who oversaw a period during which the nation’s relations with China fell to what has been described as the worst level seen in decades. The new prime minister is a politician moulded by his humble start in life as the only child of a single mother who raised him on a pension in a gritty inner-Sydney suburb. Albanese said he hoped to unite Australians who “have had enough of division” and he promised to begin rebuilding trust in Australia. He was immediately sworn in ahead of his trip to Tokyo for a May 24 summit with leaders from the US, Japan and India. The meeting will address issues concerning climate change and China’s strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific region.
