4 Strategies to Prevent Burnout for #HourlyWorkers

While a course-correction policy can help prevent employee burnout, proactively addressing the issue is always a smarter idea. There are several measures companies can take to create a #workenvironment conducive to employee well-being and work-life balance. Let's learn #howto help hourly workers to prevent employee burnout.

1. Make flexibility the cornerstone of your shift schedules

Shift workers often juggle multiple jobs at a time, not to mention personal requirements. A flexible workday allows your employees to balance their different obligations and take time off as and when necessary.

“Having the flexibility for employees to alter their schedule allows them to revise, throttle or increase their work schedule, all within some organizational rules/boundaries, allowing the employees to feel empowered and being able to better manage their out-of-work activities with less rigidness,” Correia explains.

2. Optimize shift schedules for maximum predictability

Employees who lack visibility or control over their shifts are likely to face unmanageable situations, sooner or later. 80% of hourly workers say that their schedules are a major reason for seeking new work, according to a recent Shiftboard survey. And this problem is getting severe as millennials and Gen Z enter the workforce.

“38% of workers 18–34 years old indicated they would trade pay for more control over their schedule versus 19% of workers 35 and older,” comments O’Brian.

3. Offer “micro-shifts”

O’Brian recommends offering “micro-shifts” lasting between two and three hours, which can help employees with a little time on their hands to log in and stay productive.

“This provides employees low commitment shifts offerings. Micro-shifts also allow employers a mechanism to attract more part-time or contingent workers in tight labor markets. A Shiftboard customer leveraged this to specifically target stay-at-home parents who had only a few hours each day to commit,” said O’Brian.

4. Use gamification to keep employees engaged and motivated

Employees, regardless of whether they work shifts or regular hours, are eager to learn and accelerate their career progression. “Most people enjoy learning, especially if it provides the individuals with the opportunity to grow into other roles or attain higher levels of seniority or responsibility within their current position,” Correia mentions.

Gamification can prove to be a useful tool for both learning and performance. Tasks can be reimagined as “pursuits and quests,” creating an engaging journey where the employees progress from one level to the next.
