Fancy playing a tough as nails procedurally generated, disco infused, bullet hellish, laser dodging, twin-stick shooter game set in a cave? Well you’re in luck because Out of Bounds and Excalibur Games have teamed up to bring such a game to the PS Vita and the title of their groovy gaming greatness is Laser Disco Defenders.

Laser Disco Defenders is heavily inspired by the late 1970’s. It was the time when sci-fi was starting to become popular and the disco beat was in full swing. The plot is as bizarre as any classic 70’s sci-fi B-movie. A device called the Mirror Moon controls the music of the galaxy, and whoever wins the Intergalactic Song Contest wins the Mirror Moon. Lord Monotone, the lover of synthesized electro music and ten hour space sax solos, steals the device and it’s down to the Disco Defenders to stop him. They’ve located Monotone in some caves so armed with lasers they must recover the moon and save everyone from his electro punk hell.

Do the Hustle

The caves themselves are not that big and to finish them all you have to do is shoot a handful of the enemies. While this sounds simple there’s a kick; all shots ricochet off the walls and bounce around indefinitely. So the more you fire, the more there is to dodge and the more you’re creating your own bullet hell. So if there’s only a few enemies why would you go bullet crazy? Well, the caves that you are navigating are littered with crystals that are quite sharp and dangerous. It is better to destroy them with your laser than try to pass them, and potentially losing some health. That’s not all, the enemies fire at you and glitter balls will explode when shot adding even more bullets to the bullet count. Before you know it you are trying to make your way through a cave with 50 lasers in it and chances are you won’t make it far. That’s why you’ve got dressed for the occasion Daddio!

While playing there are missions to complete; such as get a certain score or make it to a certain cave, which will unlock outfits. Theses outfits add modifiers to your character, whether it’s a medallion that protects you from one hit or a visor that lets you pinpoint your targets, they make a lot of difference. Even your choice of character affects your game. There are four to pick (Mr Baker, Tommy, Donna and Liz) and each has their own health and speed levels. Mr Baker is the perfect character to begin with as he moves the slowest and has the most health but when you get into the swing of it you can switch to try and complete the game quicker.

As well as the story mode Laser Disco Defenders includes online leaderboards so you can see how you rank against your friends and the rest of the galaxy. Another addition is Endless mode, which is locked until you complete the story, where the aim is to score as high as possible before you die.
