A young man returns to his childhood village after years of absence to visit his grandmother and brother. Upon arrival, he discovers that some of the friends he once knew there have left and those that remain now have other priorities in their lives. However, his feelings of alienation disappear when his brother initiates him into the village secret of picking stinky bean from the petai tree. This discovery regenerates the bond he soon feels with the entire community and encourages him to get to the know the local customs, traditions and indeed the villagers themselves. The experience brings him much closer to nature, as he learns to appreciate and value the importance of a traditional Malay community lifestyle.
