Today's episode was a quick trip down to the ruins of Damp's Mill in downtown Olmsted Falls, Ohio. The ruins sit almost hidden from modern society, with a shopping plaza above them and a large condominium development next to them, but I managed to shimmy my way down and get some good shots of what used to be one of the major industries in 1800's Olmsted Falls.

From the historical plaque at the scenic overlook: "Gristmills and sawmills along Rocky River and Plum Creek were among Olmsted's earliest industries. One of the most important was Damp's Mill, started here by Colonel H. N. Whitbeck prior to 1870 to grind wheat and corn using water power. Ed Damp bought the mill in 1876 and operated it for another 30 years, sometimes in the partnership of others. In 1879, the mill ground 15,683 bushels of grain.

A flood early in 1883 damaged the mill and dam, but Damp rebuilt it. The mill's new 13-foot-tall foundation of locally quarried sandstone was topped by another two stories of wooden structure. The mill's curved dam backed up so much of Rocky River's water that it formed a pond used by residents for boating in the summer and ice skating in the winter.

Ed Damp sold the mill in 1906. The flood of March 28, 1913 ruined the dam and mill. Stan Capell, who bought the wood from the old mill for $50, tore down all but the stone foundation in 1937 and 1938. Only this foundation remains as a reminder of Olmsted's industrial past."

Needless to say, it was a fun if quick exploration. Checking it out on your own should not be an issue, and its worth the view. Enjoy! -Mr. P.
