Long-tailed tits nest building

Описание к видео Long-tailed tits nest building

Watch these adorable long-tailed tits busily building their nest.

I captured the footage and images after discovering this nest on one of my lunchtime strolls.

Long-tailed tits create their nests using moss, lichens and cobwebs and line it with around 1,500 feathers! They can take up to three weeks to build these incredible and flexible domed structures. The spider silk stretches to accommodate the growing chicks, as you can see when the adult is moving around in the nest.

Just to note that this activity was captured using my long lens without disturbing the birds or drawing any attention to the location - which is vital if you come across a nest like this. It is already pretty well camouflaged (as you can see from the small window in the branches I had to focus through) and I hope that it's completely covered soon by the emerging leaves on the bramble bushes. I'll watch over it from a distance on my daily walks and keep my fingers crossed there will be some fledglings emerging not too long from now.

The footage and images were captured on my local patch in Glasgow in March 2024 using my OM-1 and M.Zuiko 100-400mm lens handheld.
