WINNER | The Vindolanda Trust - Engaging for Cultural Benefit Award

Funded by Innovate UK, Northumberland County Council and the Hadrian’s Wall Partnership, the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between the Vindolanda Trust and Newcastle University (2022 – 2024) explored the scope of contemporary art commissioning at Vindolanda Roman fort and museum, an archaeological site one mile from Hadrian’s Wall, situated within the wider transnational, Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site.

Through an advocacy and action learning programme, which engaged members of staff from across the organisation, the Vindolanda Trust were supported to experiment with new curatorial approaches and interpretation methodologies by engaging with artistic practice as a method of bringing heritage narratives to life. Such activities included staff taking part in artist studio visits and workshops, as well as piloting an artist-in-residence scheme.

The KTP builds on findings from ‘Mapping Contemporary Art in the Heritage Experience’ (MCAHE), a three-year study funded by (AHRC).
